CELINE: Shaping a New Digital and more Sustainable Energy Ecosystem

Led by Spindox Labs and Funded by the European Commission, the initiative is designed to improve the digitalization of the energy sector and benefit Energy Communities.

A groundbreaking energy ecosystem is taking shape. The project CELINE, funded by the HORIZON program of the European Commission with nearly €4 million, officially launched this December, aims to accelerate the digitalization of the energy system by improving connectivity, providing end-users with direct access to energy markets, and fostering energy exchange through the development of energy communities.

By encouraging energy exchange at the local level, CELINE (an acronym for Cross-sectorial integrated digital services Enabling energy Localized InnovatioN and community Empowerment) will empower communities and promote a more decentralized and sustainable energy model. It brings together 15 partners from across Europe, combining expertise from diverse sectors to drive forward the digital transformation of the energy system.

Driving the digitalization of the energy system

CELINE will establish a comprehensive framework for collecting, managing, and exchanging data not only from the energy market but also from other economic sectors. This framework will be supported by user-focused digital tools, policies, and standards designed to address the specific needs of energy communities effectively. To ensure inclusivity, the project will incorporate citizen engagement practices, co-design processes, and training initiatives aligned with principles of equity and accessibility.

The consortium

Spindox Labs, the R&D center of the Spindox group, will lead the project and will play a pivotal role in the project by developing a digital twin supported by open-source technologies. But the CELINE project is a collaborative effort involving 15 European partners from Italy (with Spindox, EPQ, the Fondazione Bruno Kessler and Green Land), Austria (with the Austria Institute of Technology and the FHOOE & FHOOS from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria), Spain (with CIMNE, Beedata, Ecoserveis and Sapiens Energia), France (with Trialog), Belgium (with Smart Energy Europe), and Finland (with the City of Lappeenranta and the LUT University).

The consortium held its first online kick-off meeting on December 5th to align strategies and goals for this ambitious initiative, and is expected to meet on February to advance the project's development and work on its implementation.

A Milestone for Energy Sustainability in Europe

CELINE represents a significant milestone in advancing energy accessibility, sustainability, and citizen participation across Europe. Addressing today’s energy challenges requires collective action and innovation, and CELINE is a key step toward a more inclusive and sustainable energy future.
