The CELINE Files Second Edition
A growing presence at European energy events, a General Assembly in Valencia, and real progress on the ground: this new edition of the CELINE Files captures a project in full motion.
Inside, you’ll find updates from our demo sites, new cross-project collaborations, and the launch of our Open Repository. Different outcomes, but one shared purpose: accelerating an energy transition that is open, participatory, and built with people.
From co-creation inside the Energy Living Labs to the Cross-Project Forum, CELINE aims to lower barriers, connect knowledge, and put citizens at the centre.
Fostering participatory innovation: Inside the CELINE methodology
According to CELINE, it comes down to three principles: openness, empowerment, and realism. In a recent Enlit Europe article, Tanvir Hasan from LUT University unpacked the methodology driving the CELINE project.
Digital tools alone won't deliver Europe's energy transition. They need to be co-created with the people who actually use them. That's the thinking behind the CELINE Energy Living Labs (C.ELLs): real-world environments where citizens, municipalities, and technical experts work side by side to design, test, and refine solutions together. CELINE's Open Repository
In April, we launched our Open Repository. Built as a living knowledge hub, the repository connects all the dots across the landscape shaping the future of energy dataspaces in Europe: EU policies, key initiatives, funded projects, and the technical frameworks that tie them together.
The goal is straightforward: to lay a shared foundation for innovation that is aligned, interoperable, and built to last within Europe's rapidly evolving data ecosystem.
The last CELINE General Assembly took place in Valencia, Spain on 10-12 March 2026
Last March, the CELINE consortium gathered in Valencia for its third General Assembly, hosted by Sapiens Energia and CIMNE . Over the two days, partners refined the service designs for each demo site, defining how the solutions will operate locally and how they will engage in different user groups, communities, and stakeholders.
A visit to the Endurance Motive lithium-ion battery production line brought an added dimension, offering a concrete reminder of why energy storage sits at the heart of a resilient, future-proof energy system.
With a web app already operational in Valencia and implementation advancing in Italy and Finland, CELINE’s direction is clear: moving from concept to real-world impact, one demo site at a time. Read the full press release here.
Spain: Empowering energy communities through digital innovation
In Valencia, the SIE Activa app allows members of the energy community to monitor their energy consumption, track solar self-consumption, and see the savings generated through collective self-consumption schemes in real time.
Users can check daily forecasts, identify the best times to run household appliances, and review their monthly and historical savings, making energy data visible and useful. Follow along with the SIE Activa tutorial to explore the app step by step: link.
Combined with shared batteries and solar PV infrastructure managed by Sapiens Energia, the Valencia pilot is showing how innovative digital solutions can help citizens monitor energy use, increase savings, and actively participate in the energy transition. Finland: Bringing energy data closer to residents
In Lappeenranta, seven display screens have been installed across two properties managed by Lappeenrannan Asuntopalvelu — a city-owned housing company — as part of a joint initiative with the BeyondEE project.
The screens are more than an information tool. Currently displaying real-time electricity market prices, they help residents understand their energy use and witness district heating flexibility in action. The ambition is to go further: visualising building-level data on electricity, water, and heating consumption, giving residents a fuller picture of how their building uses energy.
Through resident workshops and ongoing co-creation, these tools stay grounded in the needs of the people who use them.
Italy: Digital tools meet real users
In Italy, the CELINE demo site is entering an exciting phase: sensors are being deployed, digital tools are under active testing, and real users are engaging with the platform for the first time.
The CELINE Webapp is in the hands of an initial test group, offering energy community members a visualisation tool, smart nudging notifications, and an AI-powered training assistant — all designed to make energy data understandable and actionable for everyday users.
With the testing phase live and the user feedback coming in, the feedback loop between technology and the people it's built for keeps flowing.
E-NERGY Cluster
Last November, CELINE joined fellow Horizon Europe projects DECODIT, ENERGENIUS, DIGITISE, and EU-DREAM for a joint webinar on making energy information more accessible and engaging. Annika Wolff represented CELINE, sharing insights on how digital tools can support citizens and energy communities in understanding and acting on energy data.
The collaboration continued at Enlit Europe 2025 in Bilbao, where a joint workshop showcased how shared knowledge is translating into practical solutions. Luca Capra (Spindox Labs) discussed CELINE's open-source digital twin and community-focused tools.
Most recently, Simone Nicolussi Neff joined the EU Energy Projects Podcast alongside Helena Gerard (EU-DREAM) and Kostas Tsatsakis (DIGITISE) for a conversation on one of the energy transition's most pressing challenges: how to place citizens at the centre of an increasingly digital energy system.
Rooted in themes common across the three projects: data management, citizen engagement, digital literacy, and interoperability, the discussion makes clear that technological progress alone is not enough. Trust and accessibility are what determine whether digital tools truly empower people and ensure the energy transition includes everyone. Listen to the full podcast episode: link.
The five projects also feature in a short video by DIGITISE, reflecting their collective commitment to a more inclusive, consumer-centric energy sector.
BRIDGE
In March, CELINE participated in the Bridge EU General Assembly in Brussels, which brought together Horizon Europe peers, energy stakeholders, and European Commission representatives around the future of Europe's energy system. A highlight was the BRIDGE Projects Speed Dating: an engaging opportunity to identify synergies and deepen cross-project dialogue on shared challenges and experiences.
Smart Energy Cluster
At the Smart Energy Cluster's 4th Collaboration Workshop, Ecoserveis Cultura Energètica presented CELINE in a session spanning one-stop shops for energy services, energy communities, demand-side flexibility, and digitalisation.
Smart City Expo World Congress (Barcelona, 4-6 November 2025)
As part of the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) booth, CELINE joined the conversation on smart, sustainable cities at Smart City Expo World Congress. The event offered a valuable opportunity to connect with peers across the Smart Energy Cluster and explore new collaborative pathways to accelerate the energy transition.
Enlit Europe (Bilbao, 18-20 November 2025)
Over three days in Bilbao, more than 100 EU-funded projects gathered in the EU Projects Zone, covering everything from hydrogen and digitalisation to storage, grids, and emerging business models. CELINE joined forces with E-NERGY Cluster partners to showcase its role within the wider digital energy ecosystem to an audience of peers, experts, and innovators.
EKATE+ Workshop (Lleida, 28 January 2026)
In January, CELINE partners CIMNE and Sapiens Energia took part in the EKATE+ Workshop on innovative tools for energy communities, bringing real-world deployment experience, best practices, and digital tools for user management and empowerment to the table.
II Encuentro por la Energía Colectiva y Comunitaria (Valencia, 10 March 2026)
CELINE was present at the second Gathering for Collective and Community Energy, organised by Sapiens Energia in Valencia. The event brought together experts, organisations, and citizens to discuss key challenges and opportunities for energy communities — from financing models and digital technologies to energy solidarity.
European Sustainable Energy Week - EUSEW (Brussels, 9-11 June 2026)
This June, CELINE took part at EUSEW 2026, Europe's leading annual event on renewable energy and energy efficiency, organised by the European Commission and CINEA. By joining forces once again with the E-NERGY Cluster partners, we had the opportunity to show how collaboration multiplies the value of each individual project and accelerates impact. This is what European innovation looks like.
Enlit - E-NERGY Cluster booth (Vienna, 10-12 November)
This November, the CELINE project will join the E-NERGY Cluster booth in the EU Project Zone. The event will serve as a platform for showcasing the cluster's efforts in democratizing energy information and engaging consumers in the energy transition. Come meet us there!
